About Martha Roberts

GEDCOM Note

Martha's parents were Richard and Elizabeth Tutbury, who lived at Kneeton, Nottinghamshire. There is a Tutbury church in Nottinghamshire. Together with their 4 children, girls, aged 9, 7, 5 and 1, they sailed from the Port of Gravesend, England on October 1st 1842, on the ship 'Indus'. They arrived in New Zealand on February 5th 1843 at Nelson, where they eventually settled on a farm at Riwaka. That land is still in the family today.

Antonio and Martha lived all their married life at Riwaka, until he died in 1901. After Antonio died, Martha lived by herself for awhile at Riwaka. All the family except Elizabeth had moved across to the Wellington and Masterton areas in the North Island. About 1908 she went to live with her daughter Augusta, at Wanganui. She died in April 1919, aged 82 years. She is buried at the Aramoho cemetery, Wanganui.
