About Martha Wentworth

On 1760, at age 64, the widower Benning Wentworth (24 July 1696 – 14 October 1770), married his much younger housekeeper, Martha Hilton. She had been brought up in the family and was housekeeper at the time of his first wife's death. The marriage was the subject of considerable scandal at the time. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote “Lady Wentworth” about Martha Wentworth. She was the sole heir of her husband's large property after his death.

The_American_Cyclop... She afterward married Col. Michael Wentworth of the British army, and her only child, Martha, became the wife of Gov. John Wentworth's nephew, John Wentworth, author of “System of Pleading.” IV. Sir John, governor of New Hampshire and afterward of Nova Scotia, nephew of the preceding, born in Portsmouth in 1736, died in Halifax, April 8, 1820.
