From "History of Emporia and Lyon County, Kansas" by Laura Margaret French
Rev. Solomon G. Brown and family came from Morgan County, Indiana first to Ft. Scott in 1855 and to Emporia in 1856. Mrs. Brown died in Feb. 1857 leaving a 3-1/2 lb. baby girl, who was nursed through the summer by her 13- and 11-year-old sisters, Sarah and Margaret. Ultimately, "Mr. and Mrs. S. E. G. Holt - the Gib Holts - took her, and they brought her up. They had no children and wished to adopt her, but Father would not consent to that. . ." This baby was Martha Matilda Brown, who married Albert Willson.
