Enlisted as seaman out of Norway & immigrated to US in 1880. Married Katie Higgins in 1894 in Vallejo, CA. 1900 census shows them living in Alameda where Mortensen was Petty Officer in US Navy at Alameda Naval Training Base. Died of heart failure on Christmas day, 1901.

On 8 Feb 1861, Martin Mortensen was born in Stavanger, Rogaland, Norway to Morten Abrahamsen and Ingeborg Christine Aadnesdatter. Martin was baptised two days later on 10 Feb 1861. [1]

At the time of the 1885 Minnesota state census, head of household Ole Mortenson (age 57, born in Norway) was living in Langhei, Minnesota with his wife Anne K. Mortenson (age 42, born in Norway), their son Marin Mortenson (age 24, born in Norway), daughter Regine Mortenson (age 17, born in Norway), son Jens A. Mortenson (age 16, born in Norway), son Ole A. Mortenson (age 15, born in Norway), son Lars Ed Mortenson (age 9, born in MN), son Carl Albert Mortenson (age 9, born in MN), son John G. Mortenson (age 5, born in MN), and son Edwin D. Mortenson (age 2, born in MN). [2]

On 6 Jun 1900 at the time of the 1900 US census, head of household Martin Mortenson (age 39, born Feb 1861 in Norway) was employed as a Petty Officer in the US Navy and living in a home he rented at 5 Mastic Terrace in Alameda, California with his wife Katie Mortenson (age 29, born Jun 1871 in MO); son Earl Mortenson (age 5, born Aug 1895 in CA); and son Martin E. Mortenson (age 3, born Feb 1897 in CA). Martin and Katie had been married for 5 years. Katie had given birth to two children, both of whom were still alive at that time. Both of Martin's parents were born in Norway; both of Katie's parents were born in Ireland. [3]

Martin passed away in 1901.
