Quote from the 1851 Census:

"To the large number of deaths from scarlatina in the Parishes of Erpingham and Thwaite, is ascribed a decrease of population since 1841."

A scarlatina (scarlet fever) epidemic of 1841 significantly reduced the parish population of Erpingham from 475 inhabitants in the 1841 census, down to 436 by the 1851 census, even with a decade of births.
