Death of the Primate's Daughter
We deeply regret to record the death of Miss Mary Eleanor Benson, elder daughter of the Archbishop of Canterbury, at his Grace's residence, Addington-park, Croydon, from an attack of diphtheria. The disease declared itself on Sunday week, and was thought to be proceeding favorably until Thursday of last week, when it assumed a more serious character and an operation was performed. The patient, however, gradually became weaker and expired at 9:30 on the morning of Oct. 27. There is reason to believe that the infection was contracted during a visit paid to one of the Archbishop's employees who was suffering from an internal complaint, a daughter of his having died from diphtheria, while other members of the family had been also attacked. Among the sick and suffering in Lambeth and Croydon, Miss Benson and her sister were well known, and the deceased lady may be said to have fallen a victim to her devoted labors among the poor. She took a deep interest in their social as well as spiritual well-being, and was a frequent contributor on these subjects to the magazines. The "Nineteenth Century" for October contained an article from her pen on "Domestic Service". Miss Benson only recently completed her 27th year, having been born on Oct. 10, 1863.
