About Mary Bingham
Although William Bingham is said to have been the product of "humble stock,"4 the term in his case is misleading. His immigrant ancestor John had been a goldsmith of London. His great-grandfather James removed from New Jersey to Philadelphia, where he was a blacksmith by trade, a vestryman of Christ Church, and a large property owner at his death. A second James, who was a saddler, also increased the family property, all of which eventually fell into the hands of his only surviving son William.
William married 1745 Mary, the daughter of John Stamper one time mayor of Philadelphia. They had five children, the youngest Pennsylvania Gazette and Weekly Advertiser, November I, 1780. Pennsylvania Gazette and Weekly Advertiser, November i, 1780.2
