About Mary Bouton

Biography

The first record of Mary (__) (Allen) (Stevenson) Bouton yet found is for her husband Thomas Allen's death in 1684.

On 8 September 1682, a survey was returned in West Jersey for Thomas Allen, of 30 a. in the townfield for his house, at the mouth of Assiscunck Cr. betwe. George Bartholmew and Thomas Revell.[1]

On 16 July 1684, letters of administration on the estate of Thomas Allen, late of Burlington, West Jersey, were granted to his widow Mary Allen, with Jonathan Stevenson, carpenter of the same place, as surety.[2]

Child of Thomas and Mary (__) Allen:

  1. Mary Allen, b. abt 1680-'82?; m. James Hayes, 1 April 1703[3][4]

The next day on 17 July 1684, Jonathan Stevenson and Mary Allen, both of Burlington, were licensed to be married.[5]

Jonathan and Mary appear to have removed to his native locale in Newtown, New York, which may be where their son was born, but soon after to Norwalk, Connecticut, where he'd lived in the 1670s.

Jonathan Stevenson died on the "last of November in the year 1689." Inventory on his estate was returned by Thomas [Simon?], John Bouton Sen, and Andrew Messeger, and sworn by Mary, relict of Jonathan Stevenson on 5 April 1690 at Fairfield.[6]

Child of Jonathan and Mary (__) (Allen) Stevenson:

  1. Jonathan Stevenson, b. abt. 1688; d.s.p. 1709-'10[7][8][9]. Jonathan, her son, was apparently raised in the household of Richard Holmes of Norwalk.[10]

Mary married, probably around 1690-'92, widower John Bouton / Boughton / Bowton.

John Boutton of Norwalk executed his last will on 25 December 1706, making bequests to wife Mary, "my children by her", to grandchild John Boutton of Danbury, to son Matthew Boutton, to son Joseph Boutton, to daughter Abigail Smith, to daughter Rachell Sension [St. John], to daughter Hannah Betts, to daughter Elizabeth Warin, to sons Thomas and Richard Boutton (both under twenty three years), and to daughter Mary Boutton.[11]

On 2 June 1712, Mary Bouton "of Norwalk, widow", sold to David Scott 1/28th of Ridgefield Township, "ye most part purchased by (with ye rest of ye proprietors of said Township) My Son, Jonathan Stevens Deceased." Other deeds to David Scott from from James and Mary [(Allen)] Hayes, Thomas, Richard and Mary Bouton, Jr., complete the list, so far as is known, of the children of Mary (___) (Allen) (Stevenson) Bouton.[4][12]

On 16 July 1720, Mary Bouton of Norwalk "distributed property" to sons Thomas and Richard Bouton, to daughter Mary Morehouse, and to grandchildren Mary Hayes, Ruth Bouton and Gabriel Morehouse.[13]

No further record of Mary is known.

Children of John and Mary (__) (Allen) (Stevenson) Bouton, all probably born in the 1690s:

  1. Thomas Bouton, d.s.p.
  2. Richard Bouton; m. Mercy Platt
  3. Mary Bouton; m. Lemuel Morehouse
