James S Carson
(1736-1814)
James S. Carson was born 1736 in Brunswick County, Virginia. September 1758 he was listed in the rolls of the Virginia Colonial Militia for Bedford County. Here's a statue of a young colonial militiaman. They were similar to our reserves but were not issued uniforms.
There is a deed to James Carson recorded 1765, Bedford County, Virginia. Around that time he married Mary Ann Helm in Bedford County, Virginia. Mary was born Oct 23, 1743 in Piscataway, Middlesex County, New Jersey. She was the daughter of Moses Helm and Sarah Jameson. Moses Helm was born 1701 in Belfast, Antrim, Ireland and died 1780 in Concord, Bedford County, Virginia. His father was William Helm born in Ulster, North Ireland and his mother was a Carson.
James Carson died June 19, 1814 in Campbell County, Virginia and was buried at the Old Concord Chapel Cemetery, Number 1. The inscription on his tombstone is: "In memory of James Carson who departed this life June 19, 1814, aged 78 years". His will was probated in Campbell County, Virginia, Will Book 3 (1810-1817) pp290-291.
Here's a transcription of his will:
At a court held for Campbell County July 11, 1814 the within last will and testament of James Carson deceased, was proved by the oaths of John Helm, Thomas Dixon, and Alexander Steel, witnesses thereto, and ordered to be recorded.
After James Carson died, Mary Carson walked to Henry County, Tennessee near McKensie Station to live with her daughter Mary Montgomery (Carson) Dinwiddie. Tennessee became a state in 1796. Henry County was created 1821 from Indian lands. Mary and her servants stayed with family and friends all along the way. She died Feb 18, 1837 in Henry County, Tennessee and was buried at the James Dinwiddie Cemetery, Henry County, Tennessee.
