Biography

Mary Clarke, Quaker, was born in 1661 in Newport, Rhode Island to Walter Clarke and Content Greenman Clarke.

Mary married twice: first, in 1681, to Daniel Gould, son of Daniel Gould and Wait Coggeshall Gould; and second, after Daniel's death in 1694, she became the third wife of Ralph Chapman, the son of Ralph Chapman and Lydia Wells.[1]

Daniel Gould and Mary Clarke Gould had children, all born in Newport - Mary Gould (born 1681), Jeremiah Gould (born 1683), Daniel Gould (born 1686), and Thomas Gould (born 1693).

Ralph Chapman and Mary Clarke Gould Chapman had a son called Walter - he was mentioned in Ralph Chapman's 1704 will: ".. for the support of my said wife Mary Chapman and the child I had by her, my said wife, called Walter Chapman.."

Mary Chapman died 10 August 1711 at the home of her father, Walter Clarke, per Quaker records. She was buried in the Clifton Burying Ground, Newport. In her will, proved 3 September 1711, mentioned the children of her late husband Ralph Chapman (Isaac Chapman, Abigail Prince, Mary Chapman, Catherine Chapman, and Walter Chapman); grandchildren Sarah, Mary, Catherine, and Elizabeth Gold/Gould, daughters of my son Jeremiah Gold/Gould; grandchild Elizabeth Hix, daughter of her daughter, Mary Hix, deceased; two sons Jeremiah and Daniel Gold/Gould; and brother Nathaniel Sheffield.

Ralph Chapman was married three times. By 1679 he had married Mary____ who died May 22, 1688. They had a child born January 7, 1679/80 in Scituate. We know that by 1693 he had married Abigail ____, because they signed deeds at Newport on May 24, 1693 and January 13, 1693/4. His third wife was Mary Clark, the daughter of Walter Clark and the widow of Daniel Gould.[1][2]
