About Mary Dill

Matthew Dill was born in Ulster Plantation, Monaghan, Donegal, Ireland, in 1698, and died in Dillsburg, York County, Pennsylvania, on October 13, 1750. Mary Hamilton was born in the North of Ireland in—say—1700, and died probably in Dillsburg, Pennsylvania, in 1756. They were married about 1718. She took the name Mary Dill. He is the son of John Dill. They had seven children:

i. James Dill: He was born in Monaghan, Ulster Provence, Ireland, in 1720, and died in Dillsburg in 1796.

ii. Thomas Dill was born in Ulster Plantation in 1722, and died in Dillsburg on October 27, 1750.

iii. Matthew Dill was born in Ulster Plantation in 1726, and died in Fairfield, Adams County, Pennsylvania, on April 10, 1812. He married (1) Martha Jean Bracken, (2) Susannah Waugh, and (3) Jean Bracken.

iv. Mary D. Dill was born in Ulster Plantation in 1728, and died in 1768. She married Richard McCalaster February 23, 1747/48.

v. John Dill was born in 1735. He married (1) Elizabeth Wilson, (2) _____ Wilson. There is some question about whether this John is a son of Matthew and Mary (Hamilton) Dill. The children of John and Elizabeth are reportedly William, b. 7 Feb 1764; Sarah, b. 20 Feb 1769; George, b. 7 Feb 1772; Elizabeth, b. 6 Mar 1774; and Lawrence b. circa 1780.

vi. Ann Nancey Dill was born in 1737. She married John Sharp.

vii. Sarah Dill was born in 1741.

They lived in Dillsburg, York County, Pennsylvania. The earliest found record of Matthew Dill in America is the tax assessment lists of the inhabitants of Fallowfield Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania.

The commission of Captain was granted to Matthew during his services with the Association Regiment of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. This organization was established by Benjamin Franklin who also designed its flag. Matthew became captain of the foot soldiers in 1747–48 under the command of Colonel Benjamin Chambers.
