Mary Elizabeth Kammerer

Grandmom was always my hero. She would always tell us stories of growing up, but not til she and my Mom and the older Aunts and Uncles passed did I think of questions to ask and now I can add a little story. Grandmom's ancestors came down from New Amsterdam around 1700: The Newkirks & DuBois' and they intermarried "cousins" probably to this day-I've been gone from NJ for 40 years now... But yesterday on the internet I found the census that brings all the old stories into focus and puts names to the faces. Grandmom said she was raised by her Grandparents who used to take her to tent revivals in a buggy and her Grandpop would play the fiddle and then when she met Grandpop she was living with her Aunt & Uncle up by Riverside, NJ where she worked in a sewing factory. Grandmom's Grandparents were Isaiah W. and Sarah Elizabeth Elwell Newkirk in the 1910 census 73 & 65 yo, they had left their farm in Monroeville and were living with their widowed son Wilbert Elwell Newkirk 40, his 11 yo daughter, Mildred, and his Aunt Maggie Elwell Richman 61, his mother's widowed sister. So now I know who Great Uncle Wilbert Cassaday and my Uncle Buster (Wilbert Pete) Kammerer were named after and I don't have my cousins, Susan and Petey's telephone # to tell them. Then a couple days ago( Oct, 2011) I found the 1920 census and Grandmom and Grandpop Kammerer were living with Sarah Elizabeth (widowed) in Pitman Grove...
