Mary Eckersley, born in England to William and Hannah Hardy Eckersly and migrated to the United States on a sailing vessel called the "Pelura" which landed in St. Louis, Mo in 1845. They moved to Council Bluffs in 1847. Her father died in 1847 and her mother remarried John Crompton in 1850. The family started for Utah in the famous Handcart Company in June 1853 arriving in September of that same year.

She married Peter Erekson on January 3, 1858. They were sealed February 10, 1858. She was one of the last surviving members of this incredible group of pioneers.

Mary and Peter had 8 children. Mary Malinda b.10/14/1858 d. 7/12/1903 Peter William b.11/23/1860 d.3/30/1909 Henry Jonas b.8/20/1863 d.1/3/1934 George Andrew b.11/3/1865 d.2/12/1902 Sarah Theora b.11/21/1867 d.1/28/1905 Isaac David b.3/2/1870 d.9/8/1925 Haller Hensleyb.9/16/1872 d. 9/18/1931 Nona May b.5/30/1875 d. 12/11/1940 all were born in South Cottenwood, Salt Lake County, Utah.

She died, March 20, 1935 at American Fork, Utah and was buried March 24 in Murray, Utah.
