Captured and Killed on the march from Deerfield Massacre: In 1675 Indians sacked and burned the town. Samson and his family fled back to Hatfield where they stayed until about 1680, when he returned to Deerfield to rebuild his home and plantation. Here he lived and raised his children until Feb 29, 1703/04when French and Indians made a savage attack on the town. This was the historical Deerfield Massacre. Samson and his grandaughter Mercy Root, age 17, were killed. His wife Mary was captured by the Indians and taken hostage on a long trek to Canada. On the 5th day of the march she faltered and could go no further and was killed by her Indian master. -------------------- Killed and scalped at the Deerfield Massacre
