About Mary Anne Glanz, SM/PROG

Mail from Norma:

Recently I came across some information about the death of Mary Anne Glanz, our great grandmother. The information was completed by Annie Rosina Salmon, her eldest daughter, on 3rd October 1912. It stated that her maiden name was Farran and gave her father as Samuel Farran, a Tailor. She was born in England and therefore was English. Age when she married was 21. She lived in Postma Street, Reddersburg when she died on 25th September 1912 and she was stated as a Widow. Cause of death was Influenza, bronchitis and senile decay. She is buried in Reddersburg Cemetery, although we did not find her grave when we went there some years ago.

On the right hand side of this document was a block requesting Issue of Deceased. Under the “Living” section there was one male (grandpa Gustaf) and five females. Under the “Deceased” section there was one male who died aged 11 years and one female who died aged 35 years (this age should be 42 as Adelaide Catherine Emma died on 07.01.1912 aged 42). Obviously Aunty Rosie had estimated the ages as some are incorrect. What I wanted to point out is, this is the first time we have had any actual evidence that there was another son.

Another observation I made was that Aunty Rosie stated that she was 62 years old at her mother’s death (born in 1850, that is correct). I have examined all the documents I have accumulated over the years and have come to the conclusion that Mary Anne Glanz must have made herself younger than she actually was to accommodate Rosie into the family. Adam and Mary Anne were married on 29.10.1856 according to the marriage record. I do not believe that Rosie knew that she was six years old when Adam and Mary Anne were married, as she stated on this document that Mary Anne was 83 years old at death. Those days they were very good at keeping secrets about things they did not want to be known.

On the Death Certificate for Annie Rosina, she is stated as being born Glanz. Her son-in-law, James Polson completed that form. She was 89 years at death and it is stated that she was born in Ipswich, England and died 22nd May 1939 of Myocardial Degeneration.
