Mary Peace, was the daughter of Isaac Peace, a wealthy merchant and and his wife, Elizabeth (Gibson) Peace, both highly respected citizens of Charleston, South Carolina. She married Rowland Hazard, son of "College Tom" Hazard, in 1793, at Charleston, South Carolina. Rowland Hazard engaged largely in mercantile pursuits, but was finally ruined through the operations of Napoleon's Berlin and Milan decrees, under which there were no less than seven ships and other vessels confiscated of which his mercantile firm was sole or part owner.
Rowland returned with his family to South Kingstown Rhode Island and engaged in the manufacture of cotton and wool linseys some years previous to 1800. Here he set the first carding machines in the town--at Peace Dale, which village was named for his wife, and as early as 1800 the industry was established which has since developed into the Peace Dale Manufacturing Company. Mr. Hazard also had shipping interests, first at Charleston, South Carolina, and afterward in Narragansett. After the destruction of the pier there in 1815 Mrs. Hazard writes him she hopes he will not rebuild it, as it has always proved a troublesome piece of property, quoting his grandfather, Governor Robinson, as having desired that none of his children would try to maintain it.
Late in life Mr. Hazard removed to Pleasant Valley, New York, where he died at Washington Hollow, near Poughkeepsie, N. Y., 1835, aged 72. His wife died in Newport, R. I., in 1852, aged 77.
Burial: Their remains are interred in the family burying ground at Vaucluse, Portsmouth, RI. Also known as: Rowland Hazard Lot, Portsmouth, Newport County, Rhode Island; and as the Rhode Island Historical Cemetery Portsmouth #27
