Justinian Holden married (2) by 1674 Mary Rutter (their eldest known child b. Cambridge 28 April 1674), daughter of JOHN RUTTER {1638, Sudbury}. (On 12 November 1716, "Mary Holden widow of Cambridge … and daughter unto John Rutter Senior formerly living in Sudbury" quitclaimed to "John Amsden of Marlborough" her rights in lands of her father.
They had 7 children: Samuel, John, Isaac, Mary, Grace, Joseph & Elizabeth.
Three sons of Justinian Holden married three daughters of William Shattuck. In his will of 10 June 1727, "William Shattuck of Watertown …, yeoman," included bequests to "daughter Johannah Holdin," "daughter Abigail Holdin," and "my grandchildren the children of my beloved daughter Susannah Holdin deceased." The marriage of Samuel Holden and Susanna Shattuck is further proved indirectly, by a deposition of 1728. The marriages of Isaac Holden and Joanna Shattuck and of Joseph Holden and Abigail Shattuck are further proved by a deed of 1732. On 18 December 1732, "Benjamin Shattuck of Littleton …, clerk, John Holland of Watertown …, husbandman, & Elizabeth his wife, Isaac Holdin of Cambridge …, yeoman, and Johannah his wife, and Joseph Holdin of Watertown aforesaid, yeoman, guardian to his four children, namely, Joseph Holdin, Stephen Holdin, Abigail Holdin and Abner Holdin, minors under the age of twenty-one years by Abigail his wife lately deceased, which said Benjamin Shattuck, Elizabeth Holland, Johannah Holdin and Abigail Holdin are and were children of William Shattuck late of Watertown aforesaid, yeoman, deceased," quitclaimed to "William Greenleaf of Boston …, feltmaker," any further claim to the estate of William Shattuck. Note that William Shattuck was appointed by Justinian Holden as one of the overseers of his will.
The three daughters of Justinian Holden, Mary, Grace and Elizabeth, certainly did not marry three brothers, and may not have married at all. Having been left a twenty-acre parcel of meadow by their father's will, they disposed of this piece of land in a series of deeds, in each of which they are still unmarried, describing themselves variously as "spinster," "maiden" or "singlewoman." Mary "is said to have married Samuel Ward of Marlboro," with no evidence provided for this event. Grace Holden married Benjamin Eddy at Watertown on 17 December 1713; this would seem to be the daughter of Justinian Holden, as there is no other Grace Holden available to marry at this date. Elizabeth Holden married at Watertown on 31 May 1728 Henry Goddin. Eben Putnam assigned this marriage to the daughter of Justinian Holden, but she would have been forty-two years old at the date of this marriage, and there was another Elizabeth Holden born in 1709 who could have been the bride of Henry Goddin. The marriages of Mary and Elizabeth suggested by Putnam are far from proved.
