About Mary Lawrence

Mary Ferguson

  • Born Aug 1660 in Stratford, Fairfield, Connecticut
  • Died after 1703 at about age 42 in New York
  • Daughter of John Ferguson and Sarah Hunt
  • Wife of Robert Manning — married 1 Apr 1676 in New York
  • Wife of Thomas Lawrence — married 9 Nov 1692 (to 1703) in New York City, New York
  • Mother of John Manning

Several months after being widowed the second time in Newtown, she petitioned the court, complaining of the treatment by her dead husband’s sons. They probably wanted her to leave the house, so they could have it. She had been given use of it by her husband’s will.

8. John Manning was born about 1678, which makes him age 21 in 1699, at which time he was a witness for John Richbell (Liber A). His mother Mary Manning was a witness to Nathan and Mary Bayly's reconciliation in 1689 (Liber B, p. 43). mary manning also witnessed a deed dated aug 18, 1686 at westchester co ny.

9. John Manning born about 1678 grew to manhood in Westchester Co, NY. He witnessed in 1706, the Will of John Jennings, at Westchester C., NY. I do not know who he married, but he left a son named John Manning, Jr. This John Manning Jr, born about 1700-1720, married a woman named Mercy. They lived and raised a large family at a place their son stated was “8 miles South of White Plains”. If you look on a map, the area due South 8 miles from White Plains is Pelham Manor, today is called Pelham Park. Surprisingly, this is the same Ann Hook’s Neck Robert Manning lived at in 1682, prior to the founding of Westchester Co, NY.

On a present day map of Pelham, you will see a small “U” shaped street called “Manning Circle”. The real estate developed in 1929 was named Manning Stiles, and possibly he is related to the original Robert Manning.

10. From 1738 to 1758 John Manning Jr and wife Mercy were living at Westchester Co, NY somewhere fairly close to Pelham. However, by the census of 1763, of freeholders of Westchester Co, NY there is no MANNING names listed. I believe, just prior to 1763, the John Manning family sold out and moved to Dutchess Co, NY.

11. John Manning appears on the tax list at Nine Partners/Crum Elbow Precinct (Dutchess Co, NY) from June 1769 until 1779. He was buried at the old Poughkeepsie Cemetery, according to his son Charles Manning. Marriages and Deaths in Dutchess County Newspapers: Poughkeepsie Journal: Mercy Manning January 20, 1796, died last week, of Clinton town, 78 years of age, buried at Reformed Dutch Church yard.

12. In the 1790 census taken at Clinton, Dutchess Co., NY we find many men named Manning, and these are the direct descendants of Robert Manning and Mary Ferguson of Westchester Co, NY.
