Mary Malinda Franklin McFarlane, was born 25 September 1896 at Cleveland, Emery County, Utah the daughter of Mary Jane Potter and Andrew Jackson Franklin. My father was born at Elk Park, Avery, North Carolina. My mother at Poga, Carter County, Tennessee. They were married 18 September 1888 at Elizabethton, Tennessee. My parents were to have only a few happy years together as father died with others in the dread Schofield Explosion 1 May 1900. I was a child of four when my father was brought home for burial. I think I never got over it entirely.

Mother had many friends and she never lacked in "Southern Hospitality." We lived two blocks from school, which made it handy for our family to be in plays or any other school activity at night, which was an advantage to all of us children. I was given the responsibility of tending the younger children at an early age, as well as washing the dishes. Neither job I liked very much as it interfered with what I wanted to do.

My mother married again in 1904 to Parlan McFarlane II. They were parents of two sons, Marion Edward and Aaron Rex. Marion Edward was frail and died as a young man of 23. This gave me four younger children to tend as mother raised an acre of garden, they would play and I would watch them. It was big help but I did not think so at the time. It was during this time that mother and Mr. McFarlane took up land on South Flat, 160 acres each. We had to walk seven miles a day to school three and one half miles each way. I did this for one year and disliked it so much I refused to go to school any more.

June 9, 1913 my mother sickened and died. Before she died, she called me to her bedside and requested that I marry Mr. McFarlane and take care of the boys. Rex was just six years old and Marion was nine. Ervin was 13 and Andrew was 14. I talked to Mr. McFarlane. He said, "You are going to need help." He went right after the funeral and brought back the wife of his partner Alex McFagen. Mr. McFagen had recently died and his widow needed a home. She must have been in her late sixties and in poor health, but a sweet companion. Mr. McFarlane was away most of the time so it was nice to have her to teach me to be a better cook and housekeeper. She taught me to embroidery and crochet edgings on pillowcases.

When I was 21 years old, I did marry Mr. McFarlane. We were married 16 November 1917 at Castle Dale, Emery County, Utah. We had a good marriage for 18 years. We had one child Mary Malinda McFarlane born October 13, 1918. Mr. McFarlane died 23 September 1935 at Cleveland, Utah. On 7 June 1939, our daughter married Richard Clair Wilson of Richfield, Utah.

I was employed as a cook in mission homes of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Minneapolis, Minnesota; Boston, Massachusetts; and Louisville, Kentucky. I then returned to my home in Richfield and worked as a cooks helper at the Sevier Valley Hospital until I retired at age 70.

My mother spent her last years housekeeping, gardening, growing flowers, and making many quilts for friends and family. She died 24 October 1980 and was buried in Cleveland, Utah.

She enjoyed her family and would spend extended visits with Aaron and his family while they lived in Bountiful, Utah and Sierra Vista, Arizona. She was quite fastidious and liked to keep things clean and neat. She would work in her yard, plant trees, and flowers as long as she was physically able. She found it quite frusterating the last few months she had to leave her own home because of her need to have someone near. She was busy helping her daughter with housework the day she died.
