About Mary Means

"Mary McGregor, the wife of Robert Means, was a woman of great force of character. Her father, David, was a distinguished preacher. .....Her grandfather, James, was said to be a lineal descendant of Rob Roy; if so, he inherited none of the lawlessness of his noted ancestor, for his undoubted personal courage and readiness to fight on occasion were demonstrated in behalf of, and not against, the law...... A very different sort of woman from Abigail Atherton was Madam Means. Her virtues were of a sterner sort. Evidently she was a terror to evil doers, and wielded a power of no negative kind ..... Madam Means was a power in the town. She ruled her family with an absolute sway, and she ruled them well. Anything like feebleness of moral fibre she despised. So stern was she in this regard that I have been told she turned her firstborn from his home because of a sin against her moral code. She survived her husband fifteen years, and died in Boston, in 1838, at the house of her daughter Nancy, Mrs. Amos Lawrence.
