Four children of Peter Merrill of Haverhill died of a "Throut distemper," which prevailed in 1735, 1735, and 1737. In less than two years and two months 256 children, four-fifths of whom were under 10 years of age, died in the town. --(Essex Antiquarian, vol. I. page 10.) More than half of the children in the town who were under 15 years of age, died as a result of this epidemic. --(Chase's History of Haverhill, page 306.)
