One of the pioneer families of Wilkes County was William Miller and his wife Mary. Research seems to indicte that William was born in England about 1735. Upon reaching maturity, he became engaged to Mary (Polly) Aldridge, sometimes spelled Alderidge. William came to America First and legend says that he worked out enough money to pay Polly's transportation cost to America. She joined him in New Jersey where they were married. William probably came to America between 1750-1755. They moved to North Carolina in the 1760's, setting in the regions of the Jersey Settlement. William joined the Jersey Baptist Church by letter from Boone's Ford Church in 1775. Not much later they were living at Holman's Ford on Lewis Fork in Wilkes County. They remained there until 1783 when they moved with Elizabeth and Nathan Horton and the Ebenezer Fairchild (my 5th great-grandfather and ancestor of Fairchilds in NC) family to Cook's Gap (now in Watauga Co. near Howard's Creek). This was approximately six miles east of Boone, NC. They also owned land at Meat Camp in Ashe County with the Blackburns and James Jackson. About 1801 they moved to Lewis Fork and are believed to have remained there the rest of their lives. (See living and burial information on the bronze plaque). Tradition holds that William fought in the Battle of King's Mountain under Col Benjamin Cleveland's regiment of Whigs during the Revolutionary War. William and Mary appear on the records as charter members of Three Forks Baptist Church (as does Ebenezer Fairchild) which was organized Nov. 6, 1790. They were very active and faithful while members of this church. There are numerous land records pertaining to this family including land on Elk Creek, North Fork of Meat Camp Creek, New River, Coleman's Branch, Reddies Fork Camp Creek and on a path leading to Three Forks of New River. By 1801 William had bought land on the South fork of Lewis Fork near land owned by Hugh Montgomery, James Patton, Ebenezer Fairchid and William Jackson.
