"MICHAEL DIETZ IS VICTIM OF GAS.

Wife has narrow escape from asphyxiation.

Son's Arrival Saves Life of Mother But Father Could Not Be Revived by Pulmotor.

Falling asleep in his easy chair before a warm fire in his living room, Michael Dietz, age 58 years, 926 Lawrence street (NOTE: http://goo.gl/maps/Z5hyB), was Wednesday fatally overcome by escaping gas from a hard coal burner. His wife, Mary, who was also asleep, was found lying across the bed in an adjoining bedroom and her life was saved only by the use of the police pulmotor (NOTES: See Below), All efforts to revive Mr. Dietz was entirely unfruitful.

The tragic circumstances were discovered at 5:00 o'clock Wednesday afternoon when Edward J. Dietz, a son employed by the Indiana & Michigan Electric company, returned home from work. He immediately called neighbors and Drs. Edgar Myers, Harry W. Helmen and E.P. Moore were called and also Officers James Cutting (NOTE: possibly Find A Grave Memorial# 58554663), Charles Kemmerely and William Wesolek, who worked the police pulmotor.

Coroner T. J. Swantz was also called and expressed his opinion that the gas was generated by the stove and spread into the room, doing its silent deadly work without notice upon the sleeping victims. The damper in the pipe was closed.

Mrs. Dietz is reported to be recovering today. She is being attended by Dr. E.P. Moore.

Mr. Dietz was a laborer and had lived in South bend many years. He is survived by his wife, son and a daughter, Mrs. Grace Miltenberger of this city. Funeral arrangements have not been made yet.

This is the second accidental death in the city within the past 17 hours. The other was a victim of illumination gas while he was asleep in his room over 210 North Main street. He was Harry C. Lester, New York Central flagman, who was found dead Wednesday morning." _____________________________
