Mary Cheney was born in Anne Arundel County, Maryland on Aug. 3, 1681. She was the daughter of Richard Cheney, the elder (Abt 1639-1704) and Eleanor (Pindell) (Rydall) Cheney (1640-1709).

On Dec. 1, 1702, Mary married Walter Phelps (1680-1780). Walter was the son of Walter Phelps (1635-1719) and Elizabeth Benson Phelps (1657-1706).

Walter and Mary had 4 known children: Walter Phelps (1703-1764), Richard Phelps (1706), John Phelps (1711-) and Mary Phelps (1711-1808).
