It is just twelve months ago since we recorded the death of Mr R. W. Pope in his 85th year, and it is now our painful duty to announce the death, after a lingering illness, of his aged widow Mary Ann Pope, in her 83rd year. Mrs Pope came with her husband to Taranaki in the year 1842, and went through all the trials incidental to settlement in a young country. After residing in Taranaki for about thirteen years the deceased came to Nelson owing to the Native troubles in the former place, and afterwards settled in Havelock. She leaves behind her one daughter, six sons, about forty grandchildren and thirty great-grand-children to mourn her loss. Source: Colonist (12 December 1892, p. 3).
