Mary Henry Howze, a longtime resident of Fort Worth, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009.
Funeral: 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Andrew Episcopal Church. The Rev. R. William Dickson will officiate. Interment: 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 10, in Post Cemetery, U.S. Military Academy, West Point, N.Y.
Memorials: Her memory may be honored with a gift to the American Parkinson Disease Association, 1750 Hylan Blvd., Suite 413, Staten Island, N.Y. 10305-1946; or American Lung Association of Texas, 2630 W. Fwy., Fort Worth, Texas 76102-2170.
Mary was born Sept. 29, 1911, in Fort Riley, Kan., daughter of the late Maj. Gen. Guy V. Henry and Mrs. Mary Ingraham Rogers Henry. She graduated from Holton Arms School in Washington, D.C., and made her debut in that city in 1930. She met and married Lt. Hamilton H. Howze at Fort Riley in 1936.
Mary was a member of the Daughters of the U.S. Army as she was the daughter, granddaughter and great-granddaughter of U.S. Army officers. During her years as an Army wife, she was proficient and very active in riding and golf. She was also active in Red Cross and community projects. In Fort Worth, she drove for Meals on Wheels and was a volunteer at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History. She was also a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church and Saint Monica's Guild.
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Gen. Hamilton H. Howze, and sister, Patricia Henry Williams.
Survivors: Her sons, retired U.S.A. Lt. Col. William Gray Howze of Harker Heights and Guy Rodgers Howze of Austin; grandchildren, Kristen Beach and her husband, David, Guy R. Howze Jr. and his wife, Karen, Evan and Logan Howze; great-grandchildren, Grant and Elizabeth Beach, Holly, Heather and Gardner Howze; nephew, Ralph Henry Williams; nieces, Trish Wilson and Mary Lou Olsen.
