She helped out her sister's family (Dorothy Emma Cousens) during the Depression. Dorothy's son, George, went to England to live with her and her husband and paid for his education. However, in 1938 George got mastoiditis (usually caused by untreated acute middle ear infection and which used to be a leading cause of child mortality.) and Helen then sent him back to his family in Canada.
