NORTHWEST DEAD -- Mrs. Mary E. Werts -- Albany, Oregon, December 29 -- Mrs. Mary E. Werts, an Oregon Pioneer of 1852, died at her home in Tangent, Linn County, last night. Death was the result of old age. Mrs. Werts was one of Linn County's oldest Pioneer Women. Mary E. Green was a native of Kentucky, born April 18, 1816. Thence she moved with her parents successively to Alabama, Tennessee, and Illinois, where on April 9, 1835, she was united in marriage to Michael Smith.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith moved to what was then the Black Hawk Territory, now the State of Iowa. There they remained until 1852, when the trip across the plains to Oregon was begun. They had but arrived in Oregon when Mr. Smith died at Burnt River. Eleven children blessed the union, eight of whom survive the mother. They are: William J. Smith, of Albany; M.C. Smith, Ping, Washington; O.G. Smith, Springdale; M.G. Smith, Willow Ranch, California; L.F. Smith, Tangent; Mrs. J.H. Simpson, Pullman, Washington; A.A. Smith, Tangent; Mrs. G.W. Luper, Pendleton, Oregon. In all Mrs. Werts is survived by 106 living descendants of her first marriage. There are 43 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
