Only daughter of John Ryder Nevett and Sarah Ennalls Maynadier, she married James Steele in Cambridge, Maryland 15 Jan 1789. Mary Nevett Steele lived a very gracious and prosperous life on Maryland's Eastern Shore and later in Annapolis, MD in the former town residence of Gov. Ogle - Ogle Hall. After the death of her husband, James Steele, Mary Nevett Steele entertained the Marquis de Lafayette during his journey through American in 1824 and lived in Ogle Hall until her death in 1836. Among her children is Isaac Nevett Steele, considered in his time to be one of the best lawyers in America - a true lawyer's lawyer. The famous portrait of Mary in flame red hair was done by British artist John Ridge Pine and hung in the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC during a special exhibit of Pine's work.
