About Mary Sully

Philip Joseph Deloria’s wife Mary Sully "Akicitawin" (Soldier Woman) was the daughter of General Alfred Sully, the son of Thomas Sully the famous portrait painter. Sully, like his father, was a gifted watercolorist and oil painter himself. In the late 1860ies Philip’s father Saswe was most likely a scout for Alfred Sully, the later father-in-law of his son. And at last the children of the two antagonist peoples married one another.
