About Mary Louise Van Lear
Alice Waldon, 96, passed away on May, 23, 2018 in Ocala. Alice was born in Ocala, FL, on December 29, 1921 to H. Allison Wartmann and Cora Louise Hampton- Wartmann. Well known in the citrus industry, her father developed new strains of oranges at the Crosby- Wartmann Groves in Citra. Her father passed away when Alice was a child and her mother Louise and then later Alice managed the groves. Louise raised Alice and older daughter Elizabeth, and Mary Louise through the years of the Great Depression.
Alice was part of the greatest generation, who survived the depression as well as the horror and devastation of World War II. On February 12, 1942 Alice married Albert O. Waldon of Atlanta, Georgia. Albert was a combat glider pilot who flew missions in Europe.
Following the war, Al and Alice resided in Ocala. Alice is survived by their children, Mark Waldon of Clifton, NJ; Gale Waldon of Orlando, FL; and Craig and wife Charlotte Sue Waldon of Greenville SC. Craig and Sue are the parents of Alices grandchildren, N. Wayne Waldon of Washington, DC and Mrs. Jill (Charles) Waldon- Timmons of Greenville, SC. Jill and Charles are the parents of great-granddaughter Hazel Burke Lewis.
Alice was predeceased by both of her sisters and is survived by niece Louise (Colin) Gardner of California.
Like many of her contemporaries, propriety and duty were important to Alice, but her own special gift was her ability to create beauty. Alice had a great talent working in her garden and with flower arrangements.
