Teacher's Aide
Mary Barnett Garfield Whitney, 63, a teacher's aide at the Peabody School and a member of the Religious Society of Friends, died of a heart ailment March 20 at her home in Washington.
Mrs. Whitney was born in Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. She graduated from Vassar College. During the late 1940s and early 1950s, she taught in the public schools of Virginia and Massachusetts. She moved to the Washington area in 1980.
In the Washington Friends Meeting, she was a volunteer with the seniors center and had been active with the Peace Committee and the Hunger and Homelessness Task Force.
She was the granddaughter of Harry Augustus Garfield, 8th president of Williams College and the great-granddaughter of James Abram Garfield, the 20th president of the United States.
Her marriage to Hassler Whitney ended in divorce.
Survivors include two daughters, Sally Whitney of Ithaca, New York, and Emily Whitney of Eureka, Calif.; three brothers, Tony Garfield of Orland, Maine, George Garfield of New York City and John Garfield of North Haven, Conn., and one granddaughter.
