About Mary Xantippe Slater Selfridge
She was half-Cherokee, according to family records. (See the 1937 memoir in the profile of her father.) She died en route from Texas to Oklahoma. (See more at the entry for her father Steven Slater and her son Charles Selfridge.) On some census reports at Ancestry.com, the handwriting is poor and she is recorded in transcriptions as "Hanleppa" but an examination of the documents reveals the written name is Xantippe. Because she was known in the family as "Tippie," some family record books spell her name as "Xantippie." After her mother, whose name was Mary, died, she was also known in the family (but not on official records) as Mary Xantippe. She was said to have been a medicine woman and a midwife, according to some in the family. Her husband William "Barney" Selfridge was a doctor.
