About Masie Caldwell
Mae (Masie) Caldwell Manwaring (also Plant, Hayward, Rovensky) is the genesis of a number of interesting articles. Several include her ghost roaming various hotels looking for the pearls she lost, which were valued at the time at $1,000,000. She obtained them by swapping her mansion on 5th Ave. NYC with Cartier. The mansion which was remodeled is now the current location of Cartier (the jeweler).
More accurately, Mae was noticed by Morton Plant when she was 19 and already married. Morton was 30 years her senior. It is said he gave her husband $8,000,000 to divorce her and arrange for the marriage to Morton. The amount may be in question, but the deal doesn't appear to be.
At the time of her marriage to Col. Hayward, she was thought to be the wealthiest woman in the US.
She later married John Rovensky (1880-1970) who was an economist and wealthy banker.
Masie's death and wealth was recounted in Time magazine.
