Mason McCleeve (1991 - 2021)
Brief overview:
Mason (30), and his partner, Zanyika McClean, were asleep when five males, some of whom were armed, broke into their home in Rocky Drift between Nelspruit and White River on Wednesday 16th June 2021. Mason steered the attackers away from Zanyika and their young son into the kitchen, where he was shot at close range in the stomach and heart. He died in Zanyika's arms before arrival at the Kiaat hospital.
"I woke up and saw the shadow," Zanyika said. "We kept our bathroom light on and the shadow fell into the room. I touched my husband, then I said someone was in the house." Mason jumped up and shoved them into the kitchen to keep them away from the room." "He fought for our lives, he protected us. He was an absolute hero."
The perpetrators allegedly fled on foot. The police are investigating but there have been no arrests.
