Memorial Unveiling At Takahiwai
NORTHERN ADVOCATE, 25 MARCH 1940, PAGE 4
Weather conditions for the ceremony of unveiling headstones in memory of the late Mrs George Mackie and Mr Harry Pirihi, at Takahiwai, were bad. In spite of the unfavourable conditions, however, a crowd estimated at 270, was present when the ceremony commenced. Led by 12 members of the Māori Battalion and two Pākehā on leave, the procession moved off to the ceremony at the graveside. Combined Service. The service was of a combined nature, after which Rev. Anderson (Rātana Church) and Mr Maki Pirihi (Mormon Church) conducted the rites of their respective churches. Mr Louis Pārore, well-known Māori interpreter, was present and his services were much appreciated by the large number of Pākehā present. The feeding of so large a crowd presented quite a problem, but the Maori seems to be at his best when catering for dinner, and the three sittings necessary for dinner were expeditiously carried out by a picked staff of cooks and waiters. One party of Māori was present from Rotorua and others came from as far south as Taranaki and from Whangaroa in the North.
Eldest daughter of the late Chief Wiki and Tauhou Pirihi. Married in 1874 at the Anglican Church, Taumarere, Bay of Islands. They had fifteen children.
