About Mathew Coon, Sr.

Matthew Coon (1726-1803) was born in Westerly, Rhode Island where he married Lydia Wilbur (1729-1800).

Matthew and Lydia had 8 children at Hopkinton, Rhode Island 1749-1762, before the entire family relocated to Pawling, Beekman Patent, Dutchess County, New York. Their children are named in the will of Lydia’s father, except son Matthew Coon (1752-1836). One child, John Coon, is named in Benjamin Wilbur’s will with the other children of Matthew and Lydia, but unlike his siblings there is no birth record in Rhode Island, suggesting he was born in New York.

We do not know precisely when he removed from Hopkinton, RI to Pawling, Beekman, Dutchess, NY but it was after the birth of his daughter in Rhode Island in 1762 and no later than 1772, when he was a customer at the Merritt Store. He was named in his father's will proved 28 Apr 1775.

Matthew Coon (1726-1803) signed the Articles of Association at Beekman in 1775. He is recorded in the 1790 and 1800 censuses at Beekman. He was taxed at Beekman 1798, 1800-1802. Last recorded 1803 as pathmaster in Beekman.
