About Mathew Wreford
Matthew's name appears on the 1642 Protestation Oath Returns along with three other Wreford's, John, Michael and Richard. The oath "to live and die for the true Protestant religion, the liberties and rights of subjects and the privilege of Parliaments" was distributed to every parish. Every man over the age of 18 was expected to take the oath and sign their name or make their mark. The idea was that those that refused to take the oath would be presumed to be Catholics and so unfit to hold office in Church or state.
