Hair family records shows that Matthias Hair was born in Craven Co., SC.
No longer a county, Craven County, one of the three districts created by the Lords Proprietors in 1682 of which all three were discontinued, was the area north of Berkeley County (today's Berkeley County is not the original distrist) on the coast of the state, extending from Seewee Bay for twenty- three miles northeast, and inland for thirty-five miles. Settlers gradually moved into the interior, further and further from the coast and the boundaries of Craven County moved with them. The boundary along Berkeley County, another of the four counties, eventually extended north-west along the Wateree, Congaree, and Saluda Rivers to the North Carolina line. Since the backcounty was only vaguely defined, the area between the Broad and Saluda Rivers was referred to in some records as Craven County and in others as Berkelry County.
