About Matilda Ann Galloway Bartlett

Matilda Ann KIDD is the daughter of Addison Irvine KIDD and Mary Ellen MILLER. She was born in the green hills of Kentucky, but left there at age 6 with her family when they moved west. She never forgot what a beautiful place Kentucky was and had a fondness for it all her life.

Matilda Ann KIDD married Robert GALLOWAY. He was a widower with 2 children when they became engaged, but his oldest (son Robert Karl, age 5) accidentally drowned in a well before their marriage. Robert, Matilda, and little Mary May (age 3) became a family when Robert and Matilda were married 25 Sep 1918 in Logan, Cache, Utah. Together they had seven more children before Robert died as the result of a car accident in 1936.

Matilda raised her children (and at times a couple of foster children, as well) as a single mother during the depression by hard work and great faith. She had a home with some ground where they had cows, chickens, a large garden, and a lot of work for all to do. They each found what jobs were available, and made it through those difficult years. During part of this time she managed the Bishop's Store House (of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) for many years, assisting others during the hard times, as well.

Eventually she opened a small restaurant on her property, serving hamburgers, fries, root beer, and homemade meals to the workers in the ordinance plant that was built across the street from her home to produce armaments for World War II. This "root beer stand" became a popular place for people to go for a good hamburger long before McDonalds existed. Many of her grandchildren have fond memories of working there.

From 1965 to 1967 Matilda served full-time in the Central States Mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, headquartered in Independence, Jackson County, Missouri. She also served as a missionary in the Bannock Branch of the Church on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation near Pocatello, Idaho.

On 27 May 1969 she married a long-time friend, Elmer BARTLETT, now also widowed, in Idaho Falls, Bonneville, Idaho. They died 10 days apart in Dec 1987, both in their 90's.

Matilda Ann Kidd Galloway Bartlett has left a great legacy to her descendants. We revere and honor her.
