Notes: Bailie’s party of 1820 settlers; listed in Bailie settler book and Cosser files. DN 6/9/1852, father listed as Matthew Adams, watchmaker. CO 1326 no. 54; CO 178, 9.9.1822. Matthew left the party in August 1822 and established himself as a watch-and clock-maker in Cape Town. He married Rhoda Byrne, eldest daughter of his fellow-emigrant Alexander Byrne, in 1825. DN 3710/1839. After her death in 1839, he married Jane Nicholson. His children were:
Elizabeth 1826 Cape Town; Matthew 1828 Cape Town, James 1830 Cape Town, Rhoda 1832 Cape Town, and Ellen 1834 Cape Town.
He installed the tower clock in St. George’s Church, Cape Town, in 1834.
