"1860- Pretorius family trek to theTransvaal"
'During the early developing years of the Cape, most of the Pretorius families resided at Pretorius Kloof near Graaf-Reinet. From there the first Pretorius pioneers started their trek to the unknown north. Months later the trek crossed the Vaal River, and on 12 September 1860 Matthys Wynand Pretorius and his wife, Magdalena Gerbrecht Pretorius, bought the farm 'Slangfontein' 121 (Registration number 343) in the deeds offic, Pretoria, 372 / 1 IR about 4000 morgen in size, on the banks of the Klip River, for 8 pounds. A large portion of this farm is presently known as Henley on Klip. This farm stretched from beyond the Klip River to the Meyerton border and east towards the Heidelberg Hills.'
'Apparently the name 'Slangfontein' originated from a story told by one of the grandsons of the Pretorius family, Cornelis Johannes Rudolf (Pretorius).
'Matthys Wynand Pretorius Senior died on 10 December 1892, and was buried in the family graveyard on the banks of the Klip River (premises of the St. Paul's Church). In accordance with his final will and testament, the farm was divided as follows: One third of the above farm was left to his daughter, Anna Johanna Magdalena Gerbrecht PRETORIUS, married to Cornelis Johannes PRETORIUS (1337 Morgen 488 Roods); One third to Matthys Wynand Pretorius , married to Susara Cecilia Brits (1337 Morgen 488 Roods); and the final third went to Johannes Lodewicus Pretorius, married to Martha Maria van der Westhuizen (1337 Morgen 488 Roods).
