About Maud Thornock Bateman
Maud Thornock was born April 15, 1898, in Bloomington, Bear Lake, Idaho, to parents George Thomas Thornock and Mary Elizabeth Painter Thornock, In the 1900 census they were listed there as follows: George, 31, Mary, 27, Luella, 7, Mildred, 5, George L., 4, Maud, 2, and Lester P., 7 months old, and an adopted son, Chrles N., 13. George and Mary had been married for 9 years and had given birth to 5 children, all still living. George was born in Idaho and his parents in England. Mary and her parents were all born in England. George was working as a farmer and owned his own farm free from a mortgage.
Living next door was Adam Welker, 47, and his wife Clara Welker, 43, and their children, Roy A., 21, Raymond, 19, Georgia, 17, Rose, 14, Nina, 8, and Pearl. Adam was also working as a farmer. Adam and Clara had been married for 22 years and had 7 children, 6 of whom were still living. Adam Welker was the brother of John Welker, whose son John Eller Welker married Sarah Ann Thornock, a cousin of Maud.
By 1910, the family was listed as: George, 41, Mary, 37, Luella, 17, Mildred, 15, George, 14, Maud, 11, Lester, 10, Milton, 8, and Clarence one year, nine months old. They were still living in Bloomington, George and Mary had been married 18 years, had given birth to 8 children, 7 of whom were still living. George was still farming, and his sons George and Lester were working as farm laborers on the home farm.
In 1920 the family was still living in Bloomington and were listed as follows in the census: George, 51, Mary, 47, George, 23, Maud, 21, Lester, 19, Milton, 17, Clarence, 11, Ellen, 9, William, 7, Joseph, 2 years 7 months old, and Mildred Hirschi, one year, one month old, a granddaughter. George was still farming, and his son, George, was a laborer on the home farm, and Lester was a coal miner.
Adam Welker,. 66, and his wife, Clara, 63, and their daughter, Clara G., 16, were still living two doors down from the Thornock's, and Adam was also still working as a farmer. Living next door to the Welker's was George's brother, William Thornock, 47, and his wife, Grace, 46, and their children, Donald, 23, Cecil, 17, Owen, 12, Royal, 10, Julian, 7, Nevil, 5, and Newel, 2 months old. William was also a farmer who owned his own farm free from a mortgage. His son Donald was a minister for the LDS Church, Cecil and Owen were laborers on the home farm.
Maud married Otis Herbert Bateman on October 5, 1921, in Salt Lake City, Utah. By 1930, they were listed in the Bloomington census as follows: Otis H., 32, Maud T., 33, and Thelma, 7. They owned their own home which was valued at $1,500. Otis was working as a farmer. In 1940 they were listed as follows: Otis, 41, Maud, 41, and Thelma, 17 years old. Otis had 2 years of his high school education, Maud had one year of college, and Thelma was in her 3rd year of high school. Otis was still working as a farmer and was raising hay and stock.
In the Thursday, March 8, 1956, edition of The News-Examiner of Montpelier, Idaho, the following article appeared which mentions Maud: The Bloomington camp of the DUP (Daughters of Utah Pioneers) met at the home of Maud Bateman Thursday. The lesson was presented by Violet Nelson and Emma P. Krogue sang a solo. Others present were Inez Findlay, Clarina Ward, Mary Ann Payne, Deltha Painter and Gertrude Christensen.
Below that was the following: Speakers in meeting Sunday were Alfred Howell of Fish Haven and Bert Bunderson of S. Charles. Mr. Merlin Whatcott of Paris played a clarinet solo and Anna Marie Ward was accompanist. Below that was the following: Primary preparation meeting was held at the home of Violet Nelson last Thursday evening. The lesson was presented by Vera Dunford after which refreshments were served by Violet Nelson and Emma P. Krogue to Lark Bateman, Alaire Hart, Lois Thomas, Vera Dunford, Nada Jean Thomas, Vera Haddock, LaPriel Thornock, Maud Bateman, Birdie Reese, LaRene Thornock, Edyth Ward and Lillie Findlay.
I'm assuming that Maud and Otis remained in Bloomington for the rest of their lives. Maud passed away on July 19, 1975, and was buried in the Bloomington Cemetery. Otis lived another 7 years and passed away January 4, 1983, and was buried with his wife in the Bloomington Cemetery. The following obituary was found in the Daily Hearld from Provo, Utah, in the July 22, 1975 edition:
Maud I. Bateman, Bloomington, Idaho: Funeral services were held today in Bloomington LDS Ward Chapel for Maud Thornock Bateman, 77, who died at her home Saturday, July 19, 1975, after an illness. She was the sister of Clarence Thornock of Provo. Mrs. Bateman was born April 15, 1898, in Bloomington to George Thomas and Mary Elizabeth Painter Thornock. She married Otis H. Bateman on October 2, 1921, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Mrs. Bateman was a school teacher. Survivors include her husband; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; five brothers and two sisters, Clarence Thornock, Provo; G.L. Thornock , Pocatello; Lesten Thornock, Kemmerer, Wyoming; LaMont Thornock, Salt Lake City; Milton Thornock, Ogden; Mrs. Luelle Peterson, Lund, Idaho, and Mrs. Ellen Slade, Palo Alto, California. Burial was in the Bloomington Cemetery.
Maud and Otis' daughter, Thelma, married Arden Nephi Bunderson in 1944, and they had three children: Roy Arden, March 22, 1946, Max Otis, May 29, 1949, and Colleen, April 12, 1953, who passed away the next day, and Thelma passed away on April 12th during the birth of her daughter Colleen. Thelma and Collene were buried together in the same grave.
Otis remarried Verdena Bateman in 1955, who was born July 24, 1936, and they had the following children: Catherine Ann, born March 21, 1959, Jon, born and died August 14, 1962, Joy, born June 2, 1964, Rex, born January 2, 1967, and Gay, born January 10, 1868,
Following is an obituary for Thelma's husband, Arden:
Arden Nephi Bunderson passed away peacefully at his home in Bloomington, Idaho, on July 4, 2014. He was born in St. Charles, Idaho, on October 27, 1919, to Nephi and Annie Floyd Bunderson. He faithfully served an LDS mission to the Arizona/California Mission. After returning from his mission he married Thelma Bateman (deceased) in 1944 and to this union was born two sons, Roy (Shannon), Max, and one daughter, Colleen (deceased).
In 1955, he married Verdena Bateman and together they had five children: Ann (Paul) McCullough, Jon (deceased), Joy (Dennis) Nussbaum, Rex (Tania), and Gay (Jeff) Forsberg. Arden was an active member of the LDS church and served in multiple callings. He enjoyed outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, gardening, huckleberry picking, and spending time with his family. His garden in Bloomington was almost a landmark area.
He was a carpenter who devoted his entire life to constructing and re-modeling homes in the area and was also involved in the construction of most major industrial projects in Southeast Idaho. His life-long hobby was farming and he was renowned for his herd of purebred Saler cattle. After retirement, he took on an extended career with the Idaho State Parks Department which he enjoyed immensely and where he made a number of life-long friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife (Thelma), daughter (Colleen), and son (Jon); his parents, three sisters (Hazel Monson, Eva Booth, and Vidella Booth), and four brothers (Lester, Lee, Mark, and Whitney). He is survived by a loving wife, Verdena, six children, twenty-four grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren, one brother Lyman, and two sisters Afton (Doug) Farrow, and Marilyn (Marriner) Bingham.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at 1:00 pm in the Paris Idaho Stake Center with a viewing from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at the Schwab-Matthews Mortuary in Montpelier, Idaho and at the church from 11:00 to 12:45 prior to the services. Burial will be in the Bloomington Cemetery.
