Maurice de Berkeley, 4th Baron Berkeley

Maurice de Berkeley, 4th Baron Berkeley (ca. 1330 – 8 June 1368), The Valiant, feudal baron of Berkeley, of Berkeley Castle in Gloucestershire, was an English peer. His epithet, and that of each previous and subsequent head of his family, was coined by John Smyth of Nibley (d.1641), steward of the Berkeley estates, the biographer of the family and author of "Lives of the Berkeleys".

He was born in Berkeley Castle in Gloucestershire, the eldest son and heir of Thomas de Berkeley, 3rd Baron Berkeley by his wife Lady Margaret Mortimer.

In August 1338 Berkeley married Elizabeth le Despenser, daughter of Hugh Despenser the younger by his wife Eleanor de Clare, by whom he had progeny seven children as follows:

• Thomas de Berkeley, 5th Baron Berkeley (1352/3-1417), eldest son and heir, who married Margaret de Lisle, Baroness Lisle
• Sir James de Berkeley (born ca. 1355 – 13 June 1405) married Elizabeth Bluet; one of their sons was James Berkeley, 1st Baron Berkeley

• Maurice de Berkeley, 4th Lord Berkeley was born circa 1330.1 He was the son of Thomas de Berkeley, 3rd Lord Berkeley and Margaret Mortimer.1 He married Elizabeth le Despencer, daughter of Hugh le Despenser, 1st Lord le Despenser and Lady Eleanor de Clare, in August 1338.1 He died on 8 June 1368 at Berkeley Castle, Berkeley, Gloucestershire, England, from the wounds received at Poitiers 12 years earlier.1 He was buried at St. Augustine's, Bristol, Gloucestershire, England.1
• Maurice de Berkeley, 4th Lord Berkeley also went by the nick-name of Maurice 'the Valiant'.1 He fought in the Battle of Poitiers on 19 September 1356, where he distinguished himself, but was severely wounded and taken prisoner.1 He gained the title of 4th Lord Berkeley [E., 1295] on 27 October 1361, by writ.1

In August of 1338, Lord Berkeley married Elizabeth le Despenser, daughter of Hugh Despenser the younger and Eleanor de Clare. He married Elizabeth le Despenser, despite the fact that it had been his grandfather Roger Mortimer that was namely responsible for the execution of Elizabeth's father Hugh le Despenser in 1326.

"Maurice Berkeley, Lord Berkeley, de jure, second son, was born about 1435 (aged fifty-six in 1492). He was disinherited by his brother, and though 56 years of age at his brother's death, was able to recover, within seven years, upwards of 50 manors and other lands, that had alienated illegally. He died aged 70 years in September 1506"
