Curator note: The genealogies of Casimir de Sars
The "Recueil de généalogies, fraguements, notes et épitaphes des Provinces du Nord recueillies d'anciens manuscrits, renseignements particuliers et autres ouvrages, rédigées par ordre alphabétique" (Collection of genealogies, fraguements, notes and epitaphs of the Northern Provinces collected from old manuscripts, particular information and other works, written in alphabetical order) follows a new method, presented by the author at the beginning of each of the thirteen volumes: to facilitate the reading, a cut line separates each generation and numbers link ascendants and children. Each volume has its own table. The collection itself was endowed with a general table, realized by Wattecamps, sub-librarian, and forming since 1877 a fourteenth volume.

Casimir de Sars de Solmon (1766-1859) devoted many years to compiling genealogical information. A former infantry officer, he was appointed librarian in Valenciennes in 1800 and remained so until 1830. He recognizes that his "work is full of mistakes" because he has "not seen any authentic titles".

Always much consulted by genealogists, the work of Casimir de Sars has been partially published by the Sources généalogiques et historiques des provinces du Nord and by the Association généalogique Flandre-Hainaut.
