Medea Borelli Angelini (1860-1924) was an Italian opera singer. Born in Algeria, after her debut in Bologna in 1879, she sang in Italy, at the Teatro alla Scala and internationally. In 1882 she was the first singer to perform Salome in an opera in Italy at the Milan premiere of Massenet's Hérodiade.

Also, She was sang at the Croatian Theater " Ivan Zajc" (HNK Ivan Zajc, Croatia) in city of Rijeka.

Hi Ozren, thanks for your answer. About Medea Borelli I am sure that she was from Lucca a little town in Tuscany, beacouse I did some investigations about her. She lived in Florence between 1890 and 1924, when she died. Then in Florence there are a lot of informations about her in the town council in the municipal archives. Her parents came from Lucca and emigrated to Algeria, when she was born, probabily on the 5 or 6 of March 1861. I phoned and wrote mail to the Lucca Council to investigate to her parents but they answered me that the Historic Archives of Municipal Council is organized and divided about district, they can't find her parent's informations if I don't give them the right address about Borelli's family in Lucca during 1850/1855. In fact I don't know when they leaved Lucca to emigrate in Algeria - Costantina. I'm looking for her district in Lucca and when I'll find, I'll go at once in Lucca to find the certificate of her parent's birth and their family's story. I have to reset che the certificate of marriage in Lucca about the Archives about church. I I know her career about singer and she was one of the most important soprano between 1890/1900, but I didn't know she sang in a Croatian teather. In any case Medea Borelli stopped her career in 1899, to became a singer teacher in the Florence Conservatory of music called during 1890 " Regia Scuola di Musica ". Medea Borelli died in Florence about a diabetes disease. She married Angelini a possident and she had a daughters called Ester, born in South America during a performance about Medea and for these reason I think she was a family about Jewish origin, Ester was the Medea's mother name. Her daughter was a singer to and studied in Conservatory about her mother, In Florence I don't khow where she is buried, I investigated but I didn't find the cimitery. The name of Borelli's parents were Francesconi Ester mother, born around 1823/1825 and Borelli Luigi born in 1827 ? they were booth born in Lucca.

Medea Borelli est une cantatrice italienne, née à Constantine le 5 mars 1861. Ses parents faisaient partie d'une compagnie lyrique italienne qui parcourait l'Algérie. Son éducation musicale fut donc commencée de très bonne heure, et, à peine âgée de sept ans, elle se produisait, comme pianiste, dans un concert donné au théâtre de la Canobbiana, de Milan.

Plus tard, on lui découvrit une belle voix de soprano, qui fut cultivée avec soin et, après s'être fait entendre dans des concerts à Nice, à Marseille, à Alexandrie, à San Remo, elle aborda pour la première fois la scène en 1879, an théâtre Argentina, de Rome; en jouant le rôle du page dans Un Ballo in maschera. Cet essai lui ayant réussi, elle aborda des rôles plus importants et chanta successivement Lucie de Lamermoor, Faust et les Huguenots; à Florence, Sienne, la Spezia, Ancône, Mantoue, Venise, et enfin à la Scala de Milan, où elle se fit applaudir dans Semiramide, Hérodiade et Simon Boccanegra.

De Milan, la jeune artiste partit pour Rio de Janeiro, puis revint en Italie, se produisit au Regio de Turin, au San Carle de Naples, au Communal de Trieste, alla faire une campagne au San Carlos de Lisbonne, et revint à Milan, où les suffrages du public s'attachèrent à elle de nouveau. (GE).
