Presidential sibling. Mehetable was the older sister of President James A. Garfield. Children of Abram and Elizabeth Ballou Garfield, their other siblings were Thomas Garfield, Mary Garfield Larabee (1824-1884), and James Ballou Garfield (1826-1829). Mehetable, who married Stephen D. Trowbridge on June 30, 1837 in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, lived most of her life in Ohio. Stephen died March 9, 1893 and after his death Mehetable was cared for by her daughter Anna Trowbridge Olds. Then in 1906 at age 85 she and Anna moved to Califonia. At this point two of Mehetabel and Stephen's four children had died.
Her four children were:
- 1. Anna Eliza Trowbridge, b. Sept. 12, 1839; wife of William Olds.
- 2. Mary Elvira Trowbridge, b. Mar. 4, 1842; wife of Firman Bradford McConnor.
- 3. Melvin Milton Trowbridge, b. Oct. 14, 1845; who soldier in the Civil War. He enlisted, giving his age as eighteen to get in, on Aug. 24, 1861. He was a bugler in Company K, 2nd Ohio Cavalry. He was discharged for disability June 20, 1862. Re-enlisting in Company E, 1st Michigan Engineers, he was taken sick and died in a field hospital in Bridgeport, Alabama, Mar. 11, 1864.
- 4. Alta Estella, b. Sept. 11, 1860; married John R. Hawkins and died at her home in Wyoming in the mid-1890s.
