About Melchia "Jane" (Lee) Carter
As of 1860 and 1861, at least, John Lee, James G. Lee, Eliza Lee, Mary Lee, Jane Lee, as well as Ben. Car-ter, were all residing at the James A. Lee home. In Sept. 1860, Jane mentions that James A. Lee, her father, bartered a one·half interest in his sawmill to Ben Carter. Carter later married Jane Lee. Jane's record book had been presented to her by Ben. Carter, in 1858. Carter had long taken quite an ac tive part in all type of work about the Lee farm, according to the frequent references noted in diary.
