About Meribah Bird

Obituary added by J. Kelsey Jones: Departed this life, after an illness of seven days, Meribeth Bird, wife of Benjamin T. Bird of the town of Southport, Tioga co., aged 49 years, 9 months and 6 days. The deceased was a member of the Methodist E. Church for more than thirty years, during all of which, her walk was irreproachable(Elmira Republican, Elmira, New York, February 23, 1833).

Meribah was buried on their farm on the South Creek Road (New York State Route 14) in what is now the town of Ashland. Her marker is in a very deteriorated condition with MERIBAH quite legible in 1979 when I transcribed the marker and the remainder deteriorating. The photograph from 2014 barely distinguishes the name MERIBAH. Her Lawrence grandchildren, children of her daughter Amanda Matthews, and later the Gustin and Sutphen families were buried with her - J. Kelsey Jones Inscription: MERIBAH wife of Benj. Bird died Feb. 13, 1833 Aged 49 yrs 9 mos & 6 ds.
