King Merwig II. was killed in Chalons in 451

The Battle of Châlons or the Battle of the Catalaunian Plains took place on June 20, 451 between the Roman forces, composed mostly of foederati (Germanic Barbarian mercenary soldiers) led by the Roman General Flavius Aëtius and the king of the Visigoths, Theodoric I, against the Huns and their vassals led by the king of the Huns, Attila. This battle was the last significant military operation of the West Roman Empire.

The rest of the Thuringian army settled between Meuse and Schelde in today's Belgium, which led to a significant decline in the population of Thuringia, why they did this is unclear today.

Slaget ved Châlons eller slaget på De katalauniske marker fant sted i 451 mellom de allierte styrkene og foederati ledet av den romerske generalen Flavius Aëtius og vestgoternes kong Teoderik på den ene siden og hunnerne ledet av deres kong Attila og deres allierte. Dette slaget var den siste betydelige militæroperasjonen til Vestromerriket.
